Intelligent Design is a steel sculpture composed of animal, human, and machine parts. The head and body represent a giraffe. The front legs are human-esque, ballerina-like, and the missing back legs are replaced by a large steel wheel attached with rails and chained to the animal’s back end. The body, or rather, the surface of the body, is made of rings cut from steel pipe and welded together to form the “skin” of the animal. Using steel allowed me to create a hollow, mesh-like form with enough strength to retain its shape and support its own weight. The interdependencies of the rings call up the image of a natural ecosystem; each aspect is an integral part of the whole.

These images of giraffe are inspired by my wildlife work in Africa, cave art, and a quilt I am making as a wedding gift. When suspended from the ceiling, the slightest air disturbance moves them, giving them a life-like quality.
